Sanborn Map Project
Role
You are working with the historical preservation alliance and are charged with using a historical Sanborn map to extract information about the downtown of a city. A former intern has already digitized a portion of the city. Request approval for your area of choice from your instructor.
Problem
There is an ongoing project with students digitizing historical Sanborn maps. The map source generally used is the United States Library of Congress, but other sources can be used. The downloaded maps can be in a variety of formats. The downloaded maps should be of the highest possible resolution. |
Project Area:
- must be at least one map with at least four city blocks
- the selected map must contain buildings throughout the city blocks of different construction types
- the map must be approved by your instructor
- Georeference – use the lesson document as an example
- Digitize – use the lesson document as an example
- Create new layers in a geodatabase.

- Map Package
- A written Assessment of what was done and the methods used.
- A classified map of the area selected.

- Must be of the same region as Aerial Image
- E-mail showing instructor approval of the region

- Appropriate Symbology must be displayed
